TO HANSEN’S HOLD-UP (Self-Guided Ride)
Cautions: Slow farm traffic, gravel in curves and corners, some tight curves, deer in roadway.
Distance: 171 miles; Duration: 4 hours.
1. From Fairgrounds, go north on Hwy 124 to Cty. Hwy. S. Turn Left (West).
There is a roundabout at this intersection, so remember to “go right to go right, and go right to go left.”
2. Follow Cty. Hwy. S to Hwy. 53. Turn Left (South).
3. Take Hwy. 53 south to Cty. Hwy. D in Brackett. Turn Right.
Stay in your lane—“Highway 53 South”—while on the Bypass. Goes past Oakwood Mall in Eau Claire.
Right after crossing over the interstate there is a roundabout to negotiate.
4. Follow Cty. Hwy. D to Cty. Hwy. YYY. Turn Right.
5. Take Cty. Hwy. YYY east and go straight ahead on Cty. Hwy. U. Follow Cty. U to Hwy. 93. Turn left.
6. Follow Hwy. 93 to Hwy. 10. Turn Right.
7. Take Hwy. 10 east to Mondovi and Hwy 37. Turn left.
Suggested stop: All at intersection of Hwy. 10 and Hwy. 37, Cty. Hwy. H:
KD’s Kitchen (north); Blondie’s Café (south); Mangy Moose gourmet pizza (northwest, if open).
8. Follow Hwy. 37 south to Hwy. 35. Turn left.
9. Take Hwy 35 through Alma and Fountain City to Hwy. 95. Turn left, going uphill.
Suggested stop: The Alma Hotel on Hwy. 35 for a bite. Antiques and eateries to be found in Alma.
10. Follow Hwy. 95 about 10 miles to Hanson’s Hold-Up, on your right hand side. Be sure to STOP THERE for the view, the food, or both.
Hrs of operation: Thursday—4-8PM; Friday—4-9PM. Saturday—Noon-9PM.
11. Take a right turn out of Hansen’s parking lot back onto Hwy. 95. Follow Hwy. 95 to Arcadia and Hwy. 93. Turn left. Hwy. 95 from Hansen’s Hold Up to Arcadia is full of curves.
A Subway sandwich store is on Hwy. 95 (on the left) in Arcadia. Food and gas at Hwy. 95 and Hwy. 93.
12. Follow Hwy. 93 north to Independence (possible stop), Elk Creek (possible stop), and Eleva (possible stop) nearly all the way to Eau Claire and Cty. Hwy. II. Turn right.
Possible stop: The Indee Burger Hut in Independence, one-half mile east of Hwy. 93 at Hwy. 121.
Suggested Stop: in Eleva, at D&D gas station, 200 feet west of Hwy. 10 & Hwy. 93, on the left.
13. Take Cty. Hwy. II to Cty. Hwy. I. Turn left. Watch out for possible road construction on Cty. II.
14. Follow Cty. Hwy. I to Hwy. 53. Turn left.
15. Follow Hwy. 53 and the Bypass north through Eau Claire and past Chippewa Falls to Cty S. Turn Right. Stay in your lane—“Highway 53 North Superior”—while on the bypass.
16. Take Cty. Hwy. S to Hwy. 124. Turn Right.
17. Follow Hwy. 124 back to The Fairgrounds.
