According to an article that I recently encountered on http://freehearingtest.com, helmets can also protect you from the "silent killer" and that is wind noise. No matter how loud the bike is, wind noise can reach 100db at 60 MPH. This is like running a chainsaw. After two hours this can effect your hearing. Of course other factors come into play when riding. These might include your riding style, type of helmet that you wear and even your windshield.
The article also stipulates that the brand or style of a motorcycle does not significantly alter the noise level in a helmet and when not wearing a helmet at highway speed the wind noise is 10 times greater than when wearing a full coverage helmet. Some helmets may even enhance wind noise.
Have you ever heard of TTS? This is Temporary Threshold Shift. It's what happens when you are exposed to "loud" for a period of time. It's like when you go to a concert or run a loud power tool. If you are exposed continually it can cause permanent damage.
Anyway, the article is interesting to me but I am not convinced about the very first sentence that they post which reads
"Most motorcyclists understand the effects of a "silent killer" which follows them every time the enjoy riding their bikes". Would you agree or disagree with this statement? Take the survey and post your comments.
