Markers for the Lincoln Highway: The Great American Road Trip

The authors of the travel book "The Lincoln Highway" were featured in the local newspaper with their book. The article got me interested in learning more about the history of Highway 30. While surfing the web, I found the Lincoln Highway web-site and saw that they have a poster requesting the old Lincoln Highway markers.
To see what the markers look like, go to:
http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/news/articles/markers/
If you or others in our regions, see any of these markers, you might like to share their location with the above web site.

I added some photos to Chapter W's GWTA photo album. The pics are from a spontaneous Saturday ride that Chapter W members created to celebrate the end of harvest and a beautiful November day. We met at Grant and biked up to a famous Lincoln Highway institution: Hoke's Cafe in Ogallala. The owners have thought about calling it quits several times until the latest Lincoln Highway book came out and they decided to keep on doin' what they're doin'. What they're doin' is some of the best CFS we've had all year.
We saw the booth used by Jack Nicholson in About Schmidt and took in all the Lincoln Highway era memorabilia. After that we headed down a stretch of the original Lincoln Highway and then took the old Keystone Highway to Lake Mac and enjoyed the ride around the lake. Then headed south for ice cream and the ride home. A beautiful day for all.
The cafe is right off the interstate, right on Highway 30. Easy to get to, great food, great staff who love to share stories, great history. Worth the time, especially if the owners get the yen to retire again and you missed out on their awesome CFS.

Today, I received my Nebraska Lincoln Highway Association Newsletter. If you're in need of some roadtrip ideas or spur of the moment sight-seeing, read on:
- July 27, 2008: 11th Lincoln Highway Festival in Shelton, Nebraska. Includes Car Show on Main St, Swap Meet, Lincoln Hwy Displays, Food by the Historical Society and entertainment.
- June 17-21, 2008: 16th Annual National Lincoln Highway Conference in Evanston, Wyoming. Events at "The Machine Shop", a restored shop in the Railroad Yard, the restored railroad depot and museum, and Lincoln Hwy marker and kiosk in Martin Park. Road tours planned are a West Tour over into Echo Canyon in Utah, and an East Tour including Fort Bridger.
- Summer 2013: Kearney, Nebraska is hosting the Lincoln Highway Centennial event. The National Lincoln Highway Conference will be in Kearney... More details as the planning committees continue to meet.
For Region C and Iowa Riders: The LH Highway director is currently organizing a "River to River Motor Tour" of the Lincoln Highway in Iowa to be August 8 - 10, 2008.

That would have worked in well with your western NE camping trip and Gold Rush?

Okay, where'd my edit button go? That last reply was in response to JFrum's 30-day request.
WW, if you can convince the pivots to run themselves... that sounds like a neat trip. Gotta make some changes... this farming's getting in the way of our riding.

It's a neat book. Doesn't help the PMS though... makes me want to get out and ride. I like seeing all the stuff that's right here in our back yard and the idea of travelling in the footsteps of the pre-mega-mart, pre-franchise days. Makes for some short day trips out west to see some of the things mentioned in this and some other LH books. I learned some stuff too... like why the Lincoln Highway route was place South of the Platte River in a lot of places.... Farmers gravitated to the better soils south of the river and therefore that's where the early roads (if you can call them that) were located... Roads were the trails that the farmers used to get from farm to market and back... fewer roads north of the river due to fewer farmers. So the LH followed the existing "roads" and went south of the river.
Anyone who did the Lime Ride at the Fall Friendship Campout rode a portion of the original Lincoln highway called the "Gothenburg Stairsteps" between Gothenburg and North Platte.
