Brings back memories, 1980 GL1100 Stamdard was my first wing. Loved that bike.

Update from Lincoln Highway Association: The dates have been set for the Centennial Celebration of the Lincoln Highway Association in Kearney -- July 1 - 5, 2013 in Kearney. Two motor tours are being planned: one will travel the Lincoln Highway from San Fransisco and the other will travel from New York. The two will meet up in Kearney on June 30. A festival also begins on July 1 at the Kearney Archway.
Also, keep an eye on construction at the old Shady Bend Service Station 2 miles east of Grand Island on Hwy 30. The Woodward family is planning to restore this last remaining building of the Shady Bend Cabin Camp built in 1929 by "Doc" Woodward after he had trouble finding a motel on a family vacation to Arizona. Doc decided there weren't any motels in Grand Island either, so he decided to build one. In 1935, he began to build a buffalo herd as a tourist attraction along Hwy 30. Son Fritz took over in the early 40's and they hardly ever had a vacancy at night during the summer. A t-bone steak was 65 cents. The hotel (24 cabins with garages, filling station, restaurant, store, and 6 of the few first tennis courts in central Nebraska) came into decline with the coming of I-80 in the 1960's. The old filling station was spared in a 2004 Hwy 30 widening project.

Iowa River to River Tour along the old Lincoln Highway. Here's the poster.
Did anybody get to go last week? I'll have to check it out next year now that I know who to contact... sounds like fun and they said motorcycles were welcome.

I dont' think they're planning to build the hotel, but wouldn't that be neat... or at least a campsite area. I can tell I'm getting old... I'm getting nostalgic. I'll have to stop by and check on the place when we go to Fall Follies.

I think they should develop some sort of directory of road side motels so people travelling could get nostalgic too. All motels listed would meet some minimum requirements so that travelers could be assured it wasn't one of those places that rents to locals looking for a ... well you know. There's a place outside of Fremont that, when I drive by, wonder what it was like in its prime. It has a pool and everything. It's pretty run down now.
What you gonna say about it?

The first KFC was a motor hotel or motel as they are now called, the Colonel was famous for his ham and eggs breakfasts. He wanted to cook fried chicken faster so developed the pressure cooker method and his special seasoning mix the rest is history :) we ate at that very place while in Renfro Valley years ago. It had the original stuff on display and the chicken there was better than the places we have around here now.
