looking at a 1982 Silver Wing... any comments on them?

I found a 1982 Honda Silverwing GL500 Interstate. Except my hubby thinks there is piston slap. Any input from anyone about these bikes?
The add says "This bike has been very well maintained. It has a newer rear tire. Full dress with saddlebags, trunk and full fairing. Nice comfy ride. 47,000 miles."
Just getting started but enjoying the RIDE!!! Watch out!!!!!!

Saw a few had cam chain tensioner issues, made some noise. Piston slap is very noticable, what is the sound like? These were very reliable bikes, the 650 model was a bit of an improvement but the 500 was a good ride. I know of one here in CB is for sale for 1500, has new water pump and fork seals. Runs like a top and not so many miles, is a "naked" bike tho, no windshield or bags. Easy to ride.
The new honda cr230 enduro gets 93mpg and is a street/dirt model.
Lets go have CFS ala mode

Now he thinks it's NOT piston slap... but still thinks it's just worn out for it's age and is affraid of buying it for me... He thinks I'll not be comfortable on it... wants me to get a shadow or vtx instead. Those don't look as comfy and the wing! Anyother input?

I absolutely loved my VTX1300. Then got a wild hair to get a wing and the rest was history.
Put 40,000 miles on my two VTX's including some 500 and 600 mile days. The 1300's are a nice short bike but with a lot of power. Had no problem hitting 125. Not that I did those speeds very often. Just when I got a need for speed, then would back off.
She was a bit cold blooded. Had to let her warm up in cold weather before you could take off or she would backfire.
Would recommend the VTX as a great bike.

2 of my cousinf bought 1300 vtxs at full throttle for around 7 grand, Storm lake is another place to get one at a lower cost, they now have a touring model has hard bags and a windshield for 2008.
The silerwing here is in great shape, has less than 15,000 miles too for 1500.00 isa good buy. 50,000 miles isnt that much for a liquid cooled bike and the touring pack on it makes it a real dandy. Go for test rides and get the one suits you best is my opinion.
Lets go have CFS ala mode

Well, after long looks and test riding a few to see what i'd be able to handle... I found an excellent specimin of a 1983 Honda Silver Wing GL650...I just Won it Sat. night... here's the ebay posting # to see it....200244825826
or the link if it works for you...

It's (in my oppinion) awesome!! We're not picking it up till Labor Day weekend and we're taking the Gold wing up to get it. We'll be making a 3-4 day trip out of it. We're hitting at least 6 states just to say we did! I'm hoping to follow Daren home and ride it myself but we're taking a trailor for the Gold Wing to pull it if needed. (since i'm still learning, that may be too long of a ride for me) Can't wait to ride along with you all someday!!
Just getting started but enjoying the RIDE!!! Watch out!!!!!!

Yeah, you are on your own bike now. Now we just have to figure out a time to get together again. We had so much fun the last time.
Congratulations!!

You picked a good place to buy it from. I was born in Hibbing and raised near by. You better get up there and get it quick before the snow flies.

Oh I thought you were bringing a trailer to tow your new ride home on. A bunkhouse is fine with me and I'll approve that type of setup.
I like cheesecake. Count me in please.
What you gonna say about it?

We were gonna trailor it home... since I'm VERY new to riding..... and scared to ride in cities just yet. (last time I rode in Lincoln, NE I went head first into a brick building on 27th and O) But now we're gonna take more of the side roads and skip the big cities and take a longer trip back and take the bunkhouse instead..... So PRAY for me PLEASE!!!!

Yea I'm thinking brick walls aren't good for the front end. No worries...the first time I rode a motorcycle I drove into an electric fence. It left a line across my chest. It took me all of 10 minutes to get used to my first gold wing (the second bike I ever drove) several years later (and several years ago). Was the brick wall incident before or after the class?
Hey! You just read my signature.

The brick wall was waaaay back in 1992 or so... class of course just last month!! And it was my HEAD that hit the brick wall, but only scraped the top of the helmet a little and the bike only had a minor scuff on the tank or something like that. It was a suzuki 850 and I had never really drove through a large city before that happened... started on too busy of street!! I just got too nervous going around the corner in front of traffic... oh well, long ago, far away... I'll do better now!! Thanks for the encourgement!! Paula
